Before the early 18th century English spelling was not standardized. Different standards became noticeable after the publishing of influential dictionaries . For the most part current BrE spellings follow those of Samuel Johnson 's Dictionary of the English Language (1755), while AmE spellings follow those of Noah Webster 's An American Dictionary of the English Language (1828). In Britain, the influences of those who preferred the French spellings of certain words proved decisive. In many cases AmE spelling deviated from mainstream British spelling; on the other hand it has also often retained older forms. Many of the now characteristic AmE spellings were popularized, although often not created, by Noah Webster. Webster chose already-existing alternative spellings "on such grounds as simplicity, analogy or etymology".  Webster did attempt to introduce some reformed spellings , as did the Simplified Spelling Board in the early 20th century, but most were not adopted. Later spelling changes in the UK had little effect on present-day US spelling, and vice versa.
So many thanks. So, Term dock is used only when it's related to repair of vessel. Like entering a cube of water and then water drained away to access areas below sea level. Once ready, its filled again and vessel floats again n then gates open to enter main water body. So it's from their that dry dock and wet dock came by .
When a vessel is locked to a pier or quay,its called berthing of vessel. Not docking. am I right?
So most lakes with private or public extensions into lake for accessing small vessels is called a pier.
Interesting that this search n landing at this place happened as I M standing at a place with both pier and quay.
Is it necesaary, pier has to be absolutely of wood. The ones we have are concrete n or steel but wooden logs are tied on sides, like cushion.
Then but whats a Marina?
A harbour lets ships dock in deep water but artificially or natural features making the water body calm and safe.
So a port is basically an infrastructure to berth ships within calm waters n undertake exchange of goods.
When the depth is less, then instead of Port, it could be a quay or jetties of fishing vessels.
So in any case a geographic feature or man made break water is what keeps the water body inside cut off from what's happening outside. 'Safe harbor' must hv orgins there.
A port or quay without some sort of breakwater will be open to storms n other elements of sea. Else it should be way inland like a river or lake connected to sea n deep enough to take ships to an infrastructure made aside an inland waterbody.
Please correct my understanding n also what is a Marina. I hv been associated with ports breakwaters lagoons n everything since childhood but still can't really explain the difference with confidence
hi Jignesh I was following through ur various posts on meter bypass. I have a scenario on which I would like ur valuable expert comments. I live in a multi storied government quarter. I would like to know how to bypass the single phase electronic meter. It is giving me sleepless nights. Presently both the live and the neutral from the meter goes to a MCCB which then terminates in our flats option I am considering is like using 2 wires from one live phase from main connection. One goes through the meter and other directly to the house. Since distance from the meter to our house is considerable I cannot discreetly lay a new line to the flat I plan to disconnect the neutral in the MCCB and connect the unmetered live wire to the neutral port of the MCCB. In this way 2 wires both having the same phase would be coming to my flat from a single MCCB. We have 2 separate earth connections to the flat. For neutral I plan to use the earth wire. The second earth will be used for the three pin connections so that they are secured. The metered live phase could be used for some very low load to ensure meter running for atleast the minimum units. The unmetered phase will be used for rest of the loads. My query is-
1) Will the MCCB allow 2 live connections through it (both would of same phase so no 440 volts chance)?
2) Can I install a MCB with the earth which I would using as neutral. IF so, of how much rating.
3) What safety precautions should I take for preventing electrical shocks and equipment safety.
